  • Major Research Programs The mission of the Center for Cancer Research Development is to create, interpret and apply new knowledge based on original, collaborative, multidisciplinary laboratory studies of the cellular and molecular pathways leading to carcinoma. Basic knowledge gained will be used to design and implement novel diagnostic and treatment protocols to benefit patients.

  • The Comprehensive Cancer Center at Rhode Island, The Miriam and Newport hospitals offers a multitude of clinical trials open to adults and children with cancer.

  • The Division of Imaging Research has has successfully completed both federally-funded and industry-sponsored research trials regarding diagnostic and interventional procedures and general radiology.

  • The Vascular Disease Research Center is a center of excellence for peripheral vascular disease research that develops clinical trials and basic science research.The center can help investigators seeking to develop ideas in the vascular disease arena into fundable grant applications either formally with center involvement, or informally.
  • The Center for International Health Research addresses urgent global health challenges such as malaria and schistosomiasis.

  • The Lifespan/Tufts/Brown Center for AIDS Research is a joint research effort between Tufts and Brown universities and their affiliated hospitals and centers. The CFAR is part of a national program begun by the National Institutes of Health in 1988. There are currently 20 Centers for AIDS Research located at academic medical centers throughout the country.

  • Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine, a collaboration of The Miriam Hospital and Brown Medical School, researched programs for smoking cessation, weight and diabetes control, the benefits of exercise and more.

  • As teaching hospitals of Brown Medical School, Bradley Hospital and Hasbro Children's Hospital employ faculty who are active in child mental health research. The Bradley Hasbro Children's Research Center conducts studies on a wide range of issues, including autism, anxiety disorders and adolescent psychopathology.

  • The Ocean State Clinical Coordinating Center facilitates testing of new interventions and diagnostics, develops high quality protocols for the conduct of phase II and phase III clinical trials, generates consistent interpretation of enrollment criteria and ensures the accurate execution of clinical protocols.
  • The mission of the Division of Surgical Research of Rhode Island Hospital’s department of surgery is to provide a world-class environment supporting research programs in the surgical sciences focused on trauma, inflammation and critical care. This provides an ideal setting for training the next generation of physician- and PhD-scientists interested in the study of the molecular mechanisms of surgical trauma and inflammatory diseases.

  • The Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic at Rhode Island Hospital participates in more than a dozen nationwide and worldwide studies for many other therapies, including ambrisentan, inhaled remodulin and many combination therapy studies.
